Anchor winches: the silent equipment that secures every maneuver at sea

In the day-to-day operations of a vessel, few maneuvers are as critical as anchoring. A mechanical failure can have serious consequences: collisions, groundings, or even personal injuries. That is why anchor winches (or windlasses) are considered one of the most important pieces of equipment on board.

These lifting systems are responsible for controlling the chain and the anchor, allowing the equipment to be deployed and retrieved safely. They are usually of two types:

  • Electric: easy to install and maintain, ideal for smaller vessels or frequent maneuvers.
  • Hydraulic: provide greater strength and continuous resistance, especially on large vessels and in highly demanding environments.

Beyond the technology, what truly matters is reliability. And this is no minor issue: in September 2023, a failure in the winch of a cargo ship at the Port of Santos (Brazil) ended in tragedy. During the anchoring maneuver, the hydraulic motor broke down and the brake system could not withstand the load, releasing the chain uncontrollably. The result was a fatal accident for a crew member who was too close to the equipment.

These cases, although rare, serve as a reminder that a winch is not just a piece of deck equipment: it is an operational safety system. Its design, maintenance, and proper operation make all the difference.

A robust anchor winch, well-maintained and operated with caution, ensures that every anchoring maneuver is safe and efficient. And although it may not always be visible, it is one of the pieces of equipment that brings the greatest peace of mind on board.

At INKO21, we offer a wide range of anchor winches from the EMCE Winches brand. Discover all the models here and contact us for any additional information you may need.
